DESCRIPTION

Ascent is a site-specific audiovisual intervention on the Chkalov Staircase that investigates the threshold where a sign begins to function as a symbol. Signage is built for immediacy: it points, informs, orients, and once its utility is exhausted its meaning is spent. Ascent intensifies that duration instead, so the sign is no longer information to be consumed but a process that must be lived through.

The staircase is treated as a perceptual machine. Its vertical rise and step-by-step rhythm impose duration, physical load, and rhythmic structure, turning perception from a purely visual act into a bodily-driven path. As light travels upward in sync with pulses of sound, engagement shifts from understanding to being affected, and the sign stops functioning as data and begins to register as atmosphere. A symbol is not produced in an instant; it survives as a residue of repetition, written into memory through the body.
